Bad music: a sure way to ruin a good meal

Update: Weeks later, I ate from Guru Palace’s delicious, affordable lunch buffet, and the soundtrack was not in a loop. And it was great. So go, try them out. I may not do further restaurant reviews on this blog but I wanted to provide this follow-up.

I don’t want to be a hater but there are certain prerequisites to enjoying a meal out. Ambience figures into the experience just as much as taste does. The other night I tried out a Mesa, Ariz. Indian restaurant and admittedly the food was tasty. Fresh basmati rice, dam aloo, garlic naan and mango lassi. But halfway through I realized I’d been hearing the same song over and over and over. The chorus went something like this: “Sulky, sulky, chimeny, chimeny,” followed by some strings playing what sounded like the part of  “Jingle Bells” that goes “Dashing through the snow/In a one horse open sleigh/O’er the fields we go/Laughing all the way.” [Audio to come if I can get it off my phone.] It was on a loop! It must have repeated five times before I got the check and got out of there.

News flash to owners: no song is so good that I want to hear it every minute of my meal. And this song was no good.

The song was so bad it actually reminded me of the famed “Benny  Lava” Bollywood video:

  1. Two things:

Maybe it’s because of where I live now, but when I glance at that photo quickly, I read “Cow Palace.” Which, considering that it is an Indian restaurant, could be oddly appropriate or horribly wrong, depending on how you look at it.

I just watched that video for the first time. That’s why I need you, to keep me up to speed with the young’uns.
